Hi-Defining Moments Maximizes Capacity with the FS-100

Challenge

Event videographer Howard Adkins of Hi-Defining Moments had his eye on Panasonic’s handheld HD AG-HVX200 camera. The Panasonic would provide the versatility to shoot both standard and high definition formats and enable him to meet the needs of an increasing number of clients looking for the ultra-sharp, broadcast-quality images of high definition.

However, Adkins knew the storage capacity of the P2 memory cards was too limited for his needs. A quick calculation showed he would need at least ten 8 GB cards to cover a single wedding in high definition. With those kinds of numbers, the solution just didn’t make financial sense—not to mention the added difficulty caused by frequently interrupting shooting to change cards. And so, Adkins wanted to find a more cost-effective storage solution that could enable him to offer high definition without the high price tag of multiple P2 cards.

Solution

After researching several videography magazines, Adkins turned to Focus Enhancements’ FS-100 Direct to Edit® Recorder to shoot longer events like weddings and corporate events in high definition. Designed to work with the Panasonic AG-HVX200 P2 camera, the FS-100 enables users to record DVCPRO HD, DVCPRO 50, and DVCPRO/DV streams to disk via FireWire. The FS-100 comes standard with a 100 GB hard drive that provides 3 to 4 hours of DVCPRO HD recording time—at a price that’s far less than purchasing a couple of P2 cards.

“I liked the fact that the FS-100 was made for the Panasonic camera. The close association between and Panasonic gave me more confidence about the overall reliability and performance,” Adkins explained. “And cost-wise, it just made a lot more sense to buy the FS-100. For just a little more money, could purchase an FS-100 with 100 GB capacity instead of a single 8 P2 card.”

Results

The FS-100 gives Hi-Defining Moments 100 GB of storage at an affordable price enabling them to differentiate themselves with high definition. “The FS-100 gives me close to seven hours of standard definition without having changing tapes. That would be seven Mini DV tapes right there. I can shoot for longer periods without interruption with the FS-100,” said Adkins.

Adkins appreciates the amount of time saved in his new workflow. “The FS-100 saves me an enormous amount of time. I just mount it to my desktop, import the P2 information, and that’s it. It’s really that simple,” he said, “And if didn’t have the FS-100, don’t think I’d be able to use my camera to its full potential.”
